At Valiyaknachery in Kuttampuzha, Eldose Varghese fell victim to a wild elephant attack, leaving behind a family shattered by grief. Near his lifeless body, his sister Leelamma and mother Ruth stand sobbing, their sorrow spilling over in an unbearable wave of loss.

Had life gone on as usual, this family would not be drowning in tears today. But when the unpredictable movements of wildlife collide with human lives, fate tests the limits of human endurance, often leading some down a path with no return.

Divine hand of God

Nine children from impoverished families in Africa underwent heart surgery at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. All the patients had congenital heart diseases, but could not afford treatment in their home countries. In partnership with Rotary International’s “Gift of Life Project”, the procedures were done completely free-of-cost, including travel expenses.
Amrita Hospital, Kochi’s medical team included Dr R Krishnakumar, Head of Paediatric Cardiology; Dr PK Brijesh, Paediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery; Dr Balu Vaidyanathan, Paediatric Cardiology & Head of Fetal Cardiology Division; and Dr Mahesh K, Paediatric Cardiology.

KOCHI METRO YARD DURING FLOODS

Floods submerge the Kochi metro yard near Kalamasherry in Kochi.
On 16 August 2018, severe floods affected the south Indian state Kerala, due to unusually heavy rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flood in Kerala in nearly a century. Over 483 people died, and about one million people were evacuated, mainly from Chengannur,[8] Pandanad, Edanad, Aranmula, Kozhencherry, Ayiroor, Ranni, Pandalam, Kuttanad, Malappuram, Aluva, Chalakudy, Thrissur, Thiruvalla, Eraviperoor, Vallamkulam, North Paravur, Chendamangalam, Chellanam, Vypin Island, and Palakkad. All 14 districts of the state were placed on red alert.
